Fences and decks, Portland area

Built on footings, not promises.

Fences and decks are where Urban Edge started. Cedar, composite and hardwood, set on concrete and framed to code, so the gate still latches and the deck still feels solid years from now.

Watch a deck go up.

Six stages, in the order we build them. Most of what makes a deck last is done before the first board goes down.

Pick your boards

Cedar, composite or hardwood?

All three make a great deck. The difference is upkeep, how it ages and what it costs up front. Here's the honest version.

Western red cedar

The Northwest classic. Warm, light and naturally rot-resistant. Weathers to silver unless you seal it.

Price per square foot for each, installed: [to set with Tim]. Until then, we quote after the free estimate.

Fences

Good fences, and gates that still close years from now.

Cedar privacy

The Portland standard. Six feet of tight cedar with a cap on top.

Horizontal slat

Clean, modern lines. Great with newer homes and gardens.

Picture frame

Boards framed on both sides. Looks finished from your yard and theirs.

Gates

Braced to stay square, on posts set deeper than the rest.

We confirm property lines with you and call 811 to locate utilities before any digging.

Questions

What people ask first.

Do I need a permit for a deck?

Higher decks and decks attached to the house usually do. Low, freestanding decks often don't. We check with your city and get the permit when it's needed.

Cedar or composite?

Cedar costs less up front and looks natural, but needs a stain every few years. Composite costs more and needs only washing. The board comparison above shows both side by side.

How tall can my fence be?

It depends on your city and on which yard it's in. Front yards usually allow less height than backyards. We check your city's limit before we quote.

Who decides where the fence goes on the property line?

You do, and it's worth being sure where the line is. If it's unclear, a survey settles it. We build exactly where you mark.

Can you put new boards on my old deck?

Yes, if the framing under it is still sound. We check it first. New boards over rotten joists would only hide the problem.
